Krag followers

Post by Kragrifle » Sat Sep 12, 2020 3:11 pm

Trying out posting on the new site. Working with an early 1896 carbine and mixed up follower with others laying around. When I just picked one found that it jammed! Turns out the later followers have just a slightly angled tip that jams in the early receivers!

OK - I'll take the bait.

The 'top' follower/carrier assembly is a later model 1898 part.

The 'bottom' assembly is for your early model 1896 carbine.

I could be wrong. I find it very hard to tell from photos, because slight angles cause illusions.

The 'top' assembly appears to have a shorter arbor (front-pivot).

My literature describes about five different follower/carrier assemblies: 1892, (with two variations), 1896, and 1898 (with two apparent variations).

God help us, if someone disassembled different "types" and mixed-up parts.

If it works, clean and lightly lubricate parts, but, don't fix or mix it.

BTW - One thing that can mess up carrier/follower function is if the pin, that joins them together, protrudes a bit and drags on the magazine interior.

Hey, I'm a Krag follower. But not this kind. The title had me fooled. Interesting topic though.

Well, you are leaving us hanging. Which follower, is which?

I'm looking forward to observations on bandoliers.
