Re: Krag Rifle Serial #173672

Knute - Those last two links are interesting, and better yet, they both have a link to the Hathitrust and a 103 page history of the 28th Regiment, USV. This book was compiled by W.B. Conner and published at San Francisco in 1901, soon after the 28th arrived there from the Philippines, after an adven...

Re: Passed down Krag

Andrew - Your Krag, #142542, was assembled around October to November, 1898, as a rifle. There is no Springfield Research Service listing ('SRS Data') for your serial number, to show that it was found recorded in surviving official documents. (Most Krags are not listed). Your Krag has had a 1903 fro...

Re: Passed down Krag

'AndrewKrag' - Welcome to the KCA Forum. It is neat that you have inherited a Krag that has been in your family for generations. It has probably put some venison on the table in the past. Your Krag is a U.S. model 1898. The stock is a rifle stock, that has been shortened. Many Krags were 'cut-down' ...

Re: Hand Loading Hornady 125 grn HPs

The KCA Forum is a site.

My Krag rifles and carbines have sights.

At 50 yards, my 110 grain SP-RN (reduced) loads have hit close to point of aim.

Re: Light loads

IIRC - Detonations are a phenomena with reduced loads of SLOW burning rifle powders.

The likely danger (with fast pistol powders in reduced rifle loads) is accidental DOUBLE charges.

Re: Krag Accuracy and Bullet Drift "back in the day"

Old Soldier - The phenomena of the bullet movement to the left was discovered by extensive trial firing experiments by the Ordnance Department in the late 1890's and early 1900's. It was duly reported in the Appendix of period Annual Reports. It was a concern, especially since, they were trying to c...

Re: Krag Rifle Serial #173672

An odd coincidence? I checked the SRS Data in Mallory's "K.R.S.", 2nd edition, for Krag serial number - 167844. (There was no listing). The closest number listed was - 167841, (a model 1898 rifle, issued to Co. B, 28th USV Infantry - Lost 10/24/1900). I 'google searched' the 28th USV Infantry, witho...

'Knute' - #167844, Another documented Krag that did not make its way into the SRS Data!

attached: A November, 1901, photo of Troopers of the 1st U.S. Cavalry, picking up captured arms in Batangas Province. (On Page 152 of the document, linked in your first post, is a report of the action).

Re: U.S. Military 22 caliber rifles

My guess: The target looks like a miniature or scaled-down version of the (800, 900, and 1,000 yard) Palma Target, at which 15 shots were fired in a match. A perfect score would be 75 points, (A Possible). A scaled down version would be fun for firing .22 caliber rifles at 100 yards. (Ten shots were...
